Jewelry From an Era That Never Was

Steampunk is a relatively new fashion trend that has been gaining a rapid following. Its base is that of Victorian Era fashion re-imagined if steam power had maintained its influence. Part fantasy, part science fiction coupled with real world styles of the Victorian Age has caught the imaginations of many people the world over.

As you might imagine, a lot of the Steampunk design concepts utilize gears and copper tubing as if steam were powering any form of technology. Watches are a popular item to convert over, but you can find all manner of jewelry and clothing accessories that have been altered to have an aged and gritty look to them.

Rings that have functioning gears to watches with oversize, leather bracer type straps and uniquely styled necklaces are par for the course. Pocket watches that have pneumatic pistons that lift the cover when the release is pressed and fanciful flight goggles adorn many a Steampunk fan.

Steampunk may not be a mainstream ideal yet and many jewelry stores don't have specific pieces in the style, but if it continues to gain notice, perhaps someday they will. This fashion trend might not be for everyone, everyday... but it is an intriguing look at what could have been our past, had electricity not taken over as the premier source of power.
