Why Loose Diamonds?

For those interested in purchasing a diamond, one of the very first questions to ask oneself is whether to buy a loose diamond or one that has already been set. Set diamonds have the obvious advantage of convenience, and a quality setting can do a great deal to bring out the deep beauty of the stone itself. That being said, for the discerning buyer, there are some compelling reasons to acquire a loose diamond instead.

The most obvious advantage of purchasing a loose diamond is the flexibility of choosing your own setting. While this may require extra effort, a diamond already represents a significant investment. Why not take the extra time to pick out the setting that best reflects you? Picking a setting to go with your diamond will make it more unique and give it that added personal touch.

A very important and often neglected difference is the accuracy of appraisal. After a diamond has been set it becomes extremely difficult to identify the color and clarity with certainty. Flaws are easily hidden by the setting itself, and the color can be obscured by the setting’s reflections. For this reason, loose diamonds are especially a good idea when the diamond in question is several thousand dollars or more. Don’t be shy about asking the jeweler to let you see the diamond under normal lighting (where the spotlights won’t affect it’s true color) or to let you compare the diamond against their in-house color set.

With the proper due diligence, buying a loose diamond can not only give you the ability to select a stone more particularly suited to your tastes, but it can also allow you to better guarantee its quality and protect your worthy investment.
